K. M. 1939 Register. 80pc.pdf
The National Registration Act was passed in Parliament on the 5th September 1939.
It was an emergency measure at the beginning of WW2 in order to introduce Identity
Cards to all civilians in the UK and they had to be shown to the police or other
authorised people as and when required. Also they would be used in the
administration of rationing during the war years.
Identity Cards were officially issued on the 29th September 1939.
It was not until the 21st February 1952 that Identity Cards ceased due to ongoing rationing.
