This lengthy document refers to John Frankland of Kirkby Malzeard, wheelwright.
He made his last Will and Testament on the 3rd May 1876, added a Codicil on the 9th January 1885
and died on the 3rd of March 1885 and was buried on the 7th March 1885 in Kirkby Malzeard
churchyard. He appointed William Sunley of Headingley, Gardener and Charles Lee of Carlesmoor,
Gentleman as his trustees and executors. His wife was Mary Ann Frankland.
An Abstract of Title, dated 3rd of July 1831, states this property, consisting of two dwelling houses
and a carpenters shop, was sold to John Frankland by Elizabeth Smith, spinster of Bedale.
A Schedule of Deeds dating from 14th July 1847 to 22nd October 1885 states the property was sold
to Richard Atkinson for £220 after the death of John Frankland.
From the 1840 Tithe Map and Schedule, I have identified these properties as East View with its arable
ground, plus a house situated on the North side of the main street and rented out to Ann Nelson and
William Bilton.
The two adjoining meadows at East View were rented to John Frankland by the owners at that time,
Reverend James Geldart and the Vicar of East Witton.
Further research on the Franklands; John and Mary Ann Frankland, (above), had a son George,
he was also a wheelwright and married Isabella Raw, daughter of James Raw of Kirkby Malzeard.
The marriage took place at Kirkby Malzeard on the 23rd November 1840.
