The following information is taken from original documents found in
The Making of Mashamshire’s Edmundson and Gowland papers.
At the time of the death of William Margaret Dalgleish
on the 25th November 1884 he was the freehold owner of houses farms and lands
consisting of 248a 2r 13p at Kexmoor. The tenants of these farms were
James Thackray, and James Thackray the Younger.
In 1885 the tenants were James Thackray and Leonard Umpleby
An Indenture made the 14th September 1891 between Edward Dalgleish of
Blackheath, Kent and India Henry Bell Dalgleish of India, John Martin Little of
Blackheath, Kent and James and Amelia Mary Carter of Masham.
Whereby it was agreed to sell the property to James and Amelia Mary
Carter of Masham for the sum of £6250. This was subject to a payment of £1 10/-
per year to the Poor of Kirkby Malzeard and Grewelthorpe for ever. The tenants
remained the same.

James Thackray made his Will 30th June 1892. He appointed his wife
Elizabeth Thackray and his sons George and Frederick Thackray to be his
executors.

The above James’ father James Thackray, who was originally from Eavestone,
died 13th April 1885, his wife was also Elizabeth.
The Leonard Umpleby mentioned above married Jane Ellis and lived at Kexmoor.
By 1911 they had moved to Cliff Farm, Grewelthorpe. Leonard lived to the age of 81 years.
Leonard was the family name going back to Leonard Umpleby born 1733, Carlesmoor;
before that there was George Umpleby born 1702 and his father was George Umpleby too.
