Laverton Hall Miss Helen and Francis Richmond – daughters of John Richmond – aunts to Ralph

Laverton Hall Cottages Cottages owned by Laverton Hall 1. Miss Clark – George Clarks sister 2. George and Florrie Clark 3. Joe and Emma Topham (Gamekeeper)

Laverton Grange Dorothy Una Ratcliffe (author and poet) lived here 1922-1946. Mr and Mrs Beech in 1950’s, Mrs Hartley late 50’s.

South View Fred and Lena Ellis – 2 children – Ernest and Kenneth (John Richmonds aunt and uncle). Fred was a highly regarded pig killer!

Hope House Brewsters, then Kitchings – John, Minnie, Ronnie, Alan, Norman, Brian and Joyce. Then Nora Ashby when it closed.

Japonica Cottage Len Peacock – one son called Stan who married Olive. Stan later moved to Carter Syke Farm

Lavender Cottage Mrs Annie Jackson – sister to Mrs Kitching who had the Hope Inn in the 1950’s. Moved to Grewelthorpe.

Oriel Cottage Stan Pickles – married Evelyn Wintersgill. 2 children , Rodney and Barbara. Moved to High Belford in 1956. These cottages then condemned.
pre 1956 – Ivy Cottage

Prospect House (up lane) Willie and Ada Stubbs farmed at Mossie Mire in 1920’s. Children were Frank Stubbs (stayed at Mossie Mire, married Ada Cundell from Warren Lane. Died of cancer aged 45.) Herbert Stubbs, rented Missie Farm and married Annie Wintersgill. Freda Stubbs married Bernie Trenholme and Hilda Stubbs married John Longster The Brotherton Trust owned Mossie Mire and Missie Farm

Wintersgill Farm (up lane) 1930’s 40’s – Bill and Hetty Wintersgill. Daughters were Madge, Doreen and Phyllis. Village Farm They retired to a cottage opposite the old dairy in Kirkby. Then retired to Grewelthorpe 1950’s – George Greensit – 2 daughters Jean and Kathleen. Jean married Malcolm Rainforth who farmed Meadow Farm after Hepinstalls.
Deep Ghyll Farm Bob and Winnie Kerr. 5 children – Penny, Charles, Ian, Jennifer and Janet.

East Farm Owned by Dearlove Ellis. Tom Kirkman, employee of Dearlove Ellis. 1950’s – Dalby family.

East House Dick Topham – always went to chapel. Later Bill and Ivy Scruton. 3 daughters. Then moved to Hope Inn after it had ceased trading.

The Laurels Shop – Thomas Gill. Later Mrs Pickles + daughter. Hannah and Bob Pickles farmed at The Laurels. Doris Ward was housekeeper after Bob died around 1940. Doris married George Baeir in 1960?, who had been a German P.O.W. They inherited the farm.

Low Missise Alf and Christine Simpson.

Willow Springs Willie Hammond, retired farmer, then ? Longtime church warden in Kirkby Early 60’s.

Stone Garth

Meadow Farm Originally 2 small farms. John Metcalfe and joiners shop in one and Mr and Mrs Heptinstall in the other

Sawpitts Farm James and John Metcalfe – joiners and wheelwrights. 1926-1940.

Bank Foot Cottage Mrs Matt Topham moved here after Mr Topham died

The Cottage Fred Gill – Cobbler. Married Miss Waite from Gatebridge

Rose Cottage George Clark. Moved from Laverton Cottages

Stanmore House Derelict barn

Bogs Hall Mastermans. 1950’s – Mr and Mrs Bob Ainsley. 3 children – Jim, Margaret and Ronnie.

Sugar Hill Cottage

Sugar Hill Farm Harry Hobson, then Norman and Ivy Hobson who moved to Kexmoor about 1960. George Tyreman.

The corner by Meadow Farm was called Piper Garth Corner

The original chapel was just over the bridge on the right where cars now park.

Where the newer houses are, between the old chapel and Rose Cottage was Matt Coopers blacksmiths yard which was owned by Laverton Hall. There was a large cartwheel laid horizontal used as a template. Also a large water trough.
