An excerpt from Stephen Wade’s book – Harrogate & Ripon in the Great War. (Copied with permission).
The Battle of Ancre Valley and the fight in which Goundry was involved was a to-and-fro trench struggle at Ten Tree Alley.
On 10th February 1917 the British of 32nd Division took the trench East of Beaumont. It was very cold and the whole enterprise was severely demanding on the men. The Germans staged a counter attack on the 11th and it seems that Goundry was wounded in that fight. In fact there were 232 British casualties in that stage of the battle. He survived that but was wounded again in May. In the Roll of Honour we have the following, stating that he was missing. He had, in fact, been killed.
A letter from his officer states: Your son went into action on the morning of May 3rd, and has not been seen since. We are almost certain he was taken prisoner, as his party was cut off in the rear… I am unable to tell you how much we miss him.
